Lagos – The World Cup Group D opening match between Nigeria and Croatia is presently causing sleepless nights to the Croatian Football Association (CFA). This is the view of Hanžek Tomislav, the association media and communications manager.
Tomislav, who spoke on Thursday in a radio programme monitored in Lagos, said that it was important that they started well against the Super Eagles, reinstating that their focus remained to do well against Nigeria and that the match was the most important for them now.
“All the games are very important and all the opponents merit being at the World Cup so we respect all of them. But we are opening the World Cup with Nigeria and it is most important to start a tournament like the World Cup with a good result, so our focus now is against Nigeria and it is the most important to us now,” he said.
Rating the Russia 2018 Group D, where they were pooled alongside Nigeria, Argentina and Iceland, Tomislav noted that they were drawn in one of the toughest groups, but assuring that The Vatreni (The Blazers) would do everything possible to do well.
“We are drawn into one of the toughest groups of the World Cup, with Argentina who have one of the best players in the world in Lionel Messi and there is Iceland that beat us during the qualifiers and we know how good they are and what to expect in that match.
“But we are not relenting but will try and prepare adequately in order to first qualify from the group and then take it from there,” he concluded.
