Zambia : Zambia to enhance the capacity of Mpulungu Harbour in Northern Province

Minister of Transport and Communications Brian Mushimba says Government has embarked on a project to enhance the capacity of Mpulungu Harbor in Northern Province.

Speaking during a briefing at Pamodzi Hotel yesterday, Engineer Mushimba the infrastructure and equipment at the Mpulungu Harbor will soon be modernized to make it more competitive.

And Engineer Mushimba revealed that over 100 million United States dollars has already been sourced through the cooperating partners.

Engineer Mushimba says 1.4 million United States Dollars will be utilized on feasibility study, 60.4 million USD is earmarked for infrastructure development and 40 million is earmarked for the acquisition of water transport vessels.

Engineer Mushimba further states that Mpulungu port is the main gateway to the great lakes region and is a transit point for products like cement, sugar, maize and clinker which is a raw material in the manufacture of cement.

“Government has embarked on a project to enhance the capacity of Mpulungu Harbor in Northern Province” Mushimba said

The Transport and Communications Minister believes that the Mpulungu Harbor plays a critical role in transport corridors as a trade facilitator and an enhancer of regional integration.
