…Ambassador Assures Ellen

Zhang Yue, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China accredited to Liberia says the PRC is ready to work with Liberia and Africa.
He said the development of China not only brings benefits to almost 1.4 billion Chinese, but also to the 7.5 billion people around the world.
Ambassador Yue made the statement Wednesday at reception dinner held in Monrovia in commemoration of the 68th founding day of the People’s Republic of China.
He explained that China and Liberia relationship has enjoyed rapid development over the past 14 years since the resumption of diplomatic ties, especially the administration of President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.
According to him, relations between the two countries have deepened in terms of political trust, upgraded economic cooperation and widened exchanges in the humanities. He pointed out that the stock of Chinese investment in Liberia has reached over US$300 million, thus making the PRC one of the major investors in Liberia.
“We cannot take China-Liberia fruitful relationship for granted. First of all, we owe it to the vision and commitment of the Chinese leaders and Madam President, as well as the concerted efforts of our two peoples” Ambassador Yue stressed.
He stated that adhering to the one China principle is not only the policy adopted by the Liberian government, but also the common aspiration of the Liberian people.
He urged Liberian political parties to stick to the one China policy for the overall interests of the Liberian people and the China-Liberia relationship.
He expressed optimism about the country holding peaceful elections because according to him, Liberia has a solid foundation being laid by the government of President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.
He assured President Sirleaf that China is ready to make more contributions to the rebuilding process of Liberia in various areas.
Ambassador Yue also thanked President Sirleaf for her solicitude and unremitting efforts to promote China-Liberia friendship and cooperation.
For her part, President Ellen Johnson lauded China for the construction of the Fendell Campus of the University of Liberia and other infrastructure projects under construction through China aid, adding that Liberia is grateful for all that China has done.
She said Liberia is firm and it has been endorsed and ratified through the Legislature, the One China policy. She expressed hope that successive governments will realize that it is the proper international position to take and they should respect that.
She said cooperation between Liberia and China will be encouraged at all levels, adding that Liberia and China has been working on similar goals for the improvement of the United Nations system and their positions are consistent.
She commended China for building the capacity of the Armed Forces of Liberia through the provision of equipment for the engineering department.
