Lagos – Ikechukwu Ezenwa, the goalkeeper of FC IfeanyiUbah, will man the post on Friday when the Super Eagles play the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon. The development may not be unconnected to Daniel Akpeyi’s recurring injury, which kept him out of his club’s couple of matches.
Akpeyi, Independent gathered, could not train with the rest of the squad on Tuesday, raising concern on the state of his fitness ahead of the crucial match.
Consequently, Coach Gernot Rohr, it has been gathered, has chosen Ezenwa to be in goal on Friday while Dele Alampasu will deputise him.
The development means that Ezenwa will finally get his big break with the Super Eagles as after a long wait for the opportunity.
“This boy (Ezenwa) who plays in Nigeria will start the game,” disclosed Rohr.
“He did well with the CHAN team and he will do well (vs Cameroon), we will protect him and give him confidence. The home fans will also give him confidence.”
Ezenwa is sipper of the home-based Eagles and his penalty save helped the country to qualify for a third straight CHAN at the expense of Benin in Kano recently.
He featured at the 2007 FIFA U20 World Cup in Canada alongside the likes of Brown Ideye and Elderson Echiejile.
