Woman with fake penis sentenced for obtaining sex through false pretense

  • Gayle Newland posed as a man for two, creating a fake Facebook profile to woo the victim
  • She told the victim to wear a blindfold because she was insecure about her appearance
  • The victim only discovered she was having sex with woman when she took off the mask during one of their 15 sexual encounters

A woman who tricked a friend into sex with a fake penis by blindfolding her and pretending to be a man has been sentenced to six and a half years in prison.

Gayle Newland created multiple “disturbingly complex” online personas to achieve her own “bizarre sexual satisfaction”, Manchester Crown Court heard.

The deceitful and crafty 27-year-old used a fake identity to create a Facebook account and pose as a half-Filipino half-Latino man called Kye Fortune.

Over a two-year period, Newland developed an online relationship with the victim, also in her 20s, under this name.

She lowered her voice when they spoke on the phone and used pictures of an American man on her Facebook page to give ‘Kye’ a physical identity.

And when the pair eventually met up, Newland told the victim to wear a blindfold because she was insecure about her appearance.

The victim only discovered she was having sex with Newland, and not her boyfriend ‘Kye’, when she took off the mask during one of their 15 sexual encounters.

Judge David Stockdale QC said the offences demonstrate “an extraordinary degree of cunning and a chilling desire to manipulate and control the lives of others”.

Newland grabbed hold of the dock’s glass panels and screamed ‘no’ when her sentence was read.

Shaking her head and crying, the 27-year-old looked up at family members in the public gallery, who shouted words of comfort and blew kisses. The previous month, a jury at Manchester Crown Court found Newland, from Cheshire, guilty of committing sexual assault by using a prosthetic penis without her blindfolded victim’s consent, following a retrial.

The court heard the defendant spent hundreds of hours talking on the telephone to her friend as ‘Kye’, who said ‘he’ was undergoing treatment for cancer and was paranoid about his physical appearance.

The victim agreed to wear a blindfold at all times during their sexual encounters and other face-to-face exchanges.

In her defence, Newland claimed both women were gay and struggling with their sexuality. She said when they met up and had sex they used ‘Kye’ as a fantasy figure during role-play.

She denied concealing her identity but was found guilty of three counts of sexual assault and cleared of a fourth count.

Newland was jailed for eight years in November 2015 after she was convicted of the same offences by another jury at Chester Crown Court.

But the conviction was quashed in the Court of Appeal last December and a retrial ordered after it was ruled the trial judge’s summing up of the case was not fair and balanced.

Mental health experts blasted the original jail term, saying troubled Newland should not have been locked up and instead needed psychiatric care.

In an interesting turn of events during the retrial last month, Newland pleaded guilty to fraud by false representation. Last week, at Manchester Crown Court, the judge imprisoned Newland for six years and six months.

She received a six-year sentence for sexual assault and a six-month sentence, to run consecutively, for fraud.
