Be patient, market fires victims urged

LUSAKA Province Minister Japhen Mwakalombe has urged traders that were affected by the recent spate of fires in markets to be patient as Government mobilises resources to help them rebuild their businesses.

Mr Mwakalombe said he had received complaints from some affected traders at Kamwala and Chilenje markets that they have not received attention as much as those from Lusaka City Market.

He said in an interview that the committee of ministers appointed the President Lungu to look into the plight of the affected traders has taken a holistic approach of ensuring that all the affected traders received the needed help soon.
“We, have all been negatively affected by the recent spate of fires in various markets and we are working to ensure that we help our traders resume their operations soon. We, handling this issue holistically because we want to ensure that every affected trader is helped,” he said.
Mr Mwakalombe said the city market fire affected over 3,000 stalls and goods worth millions of Kwacha were destroyed and stolen, a situation that prompted Government to come up with immediate temporary measures to cushion the plight of traders.
He said Government remains committed to ensuring all the traders receive the much-needed assistance.
Mr Mwakalombe also commended various stakeholders for coming on board to donate towards helping the traders and reconstruction of Lusaka City Market.
He said the move has supplemented Government’s effort to spread limited resources among different development projects including the unexpected affected traders.
Mr Mwakalombe said Zambia is a Christian nation that is governed on the principles of love, giving, peace, among others, hence the need to ensure these values are upheld by all citizens.
